The inspiration for this project came from many sources, but the two main ones are: the ancient Greek myth about Baucis and Philemon and the mobile game Gorogoa.
The story of Baucis and Philemon
Zeus is not happy with how the humans have evolved on earth. He finds them egoistic and wants to wipe them out with a flood and start over. But before doing so, he decides to gie them one last chance. Together with his son Hermes, Zeus descends to earth disguised as poor travelers.
They walk from house to house looking for shelter but are turned away everywhere.. until they reach the house of Baucis and Philemon, a poor couple. The gods are welcomed and treated like honoured guests. To show their gratitude, the gods reveal themselves and leads the couple up on a hill to avoid the flood. They watch the valley becoming filled with water but Zeus spares the couples modest cottage and transform it into a temple. The couple asks to serve the gods in the temple and are granted yet another wish. They could ask for anything in the world but they’re not interested in riches or comfort. The only thing they ask for is to die at the same time so that one never has to be alone. Zeus grants their wish by transforming them into an oak and a linden, forever embracing each other.
